What is home insurance?
Home insurance is an umbrella term that encompasses two types of insurance for your home: building and contents insurance. Find out more about what’s covered within these two policies and whether you need them below.
What does building insurance cover?
Imagine turning your home upside down and shaking the contents out. Building insurance covers everything that’s left.
Dowiedz się więcejWhat does contents insurance cover?
Contents insurance covers loss, theft or damage to your personal possessions in your home, including:
- Furniture
- Appliances
- Personal items
- Decorative pieces
You will often have to pay more to cover accidental damage.
Personal possessions cover
Personal possessions cover insures you for specified items that can be taken outside the home. This includes if items are lost, stolen or damaged outside your home, such as jewellery, mobile devices and bicycles. Typically, contents insurance will only cover items inside your home, so it’s an important consideration for higher-value items. Some items will need to be specifically specified to be covered, but we can advise you on this.
Często zadawane pytania
Do you need building and contents insurance?
Building insurance is often required to secure a mortgage. If you wouldn’t be able to comfortably afford a potential rebuild of all or parts of your property, you should definitely get insurance. As for contents insurance, it’s up to you whether you get cover and how much. Again, if you wouldn’t comfortably be able to afford replacements of all or some of your belongings, getting insurance is worthwhile.
How much contents insurance do you need?
Contents insurance should cover the replacement value of the items in your home. If you have a lot of items, this could seem like a daunting task. However, it’s worth creating an inventory of what you want covered. Even lower-value items can add up, so don’t overlook kitchen crockery, books, household linens, etc.
When should you get home and contents insurance?
Your policy will need to start from the date contracts are exchanged, so as soon as the house is officially in your ownership, you need building insurance.
What is a new for old policy?
Having a new for old policy means you’re entitled to replace possessions with new items of the same value in the event of them being lost, stolen or damaged. However, proof of purchase will be required should a claim occur.
